Ireland were competing with Wales, Finland and Bulgaria, and thanks to a goalless draw against Bulgaria in the last round of games, the Irish team ultimately secured their status in league B by finishing in 3rd place. This design carried over to the European Qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup where Ireland continued their struggles as they finished 3rd in Group A behind Serbia and Portugal, and will miss out on the Qatari tournament, extending their wait for World Cup participation to at least 24 years
